Grow'Em 2000
for Windows 95 and beyond

Grow'Em 2000 is plant-propagation software made freely available to the public for personal use. It contains extensive and well-illustrated information on propagating plants from seeds, cuttings, by layering and other popular and lesser-known methods. Exhaustive plant-specific information is provided for 1000-plus entries in seven categories including fruits and vegetables, herbs, trees and shrubs, cacti and succulents, and water plants. Composting, fertilizers, raised beds and cold frames, lighting, row covers, drainage and irrigation, grafting and other subjects are among the subjects featured.

Grow'Em is an easy-to-use resource, easily searchable, and includes a metric-to-standard conversion function. Grow'Em requires a system running at least Windows 95, an SVGA card capable of at least 640 x 480 x 256 colour resolution (a true-colour display is ideal), and a hard drive with at least 5 MB free.

Grow'Em is distributed as freeware: feel free to pass it on to family, friends, acquaintances, and use it as much or as long as you wish, without charge. However, no sales fees may be charged for the program, and distribution costs for this program may not exceed $5 US without express permission of the author.

Grow'Em is copyrighted. Though it may be distributed and used without charge, it continues to belong wholly to the author, and may not be modified without express permission, given in writing. Please Enjoy,

A footnote: I don't know of any other resource, in print or as software, that provides the same exhaustive information on propagating various species as Grow'Em does. I am proud of this program, and with great pleasure offer it to you, and wish you fruitful gardening...

Installation

Installation could not be simpler: if you've extracted this file from the ZIP archive, then you've already accomplished the hardest part. Using any UNZIP program (PKZIP and WINZIP are among the most popular ones), unzip the program to the default suggested C:\GROW directory, or any directory of your choosing. You can easily add Grow'Em 2000 to your Windows taskbar or to the Windows desktop; this is described in Microsoft's Windows documentation.

About Grow'Em 2000

Grow'Em has gone through multiple incarnations, including Grow'Em for Windows 95, version 1.0 and Grow'Em for DOS, version 4.0. Grow'Em 2000 is a reworking of the registered shareware versions of those programs, with all the information and images of the full-featured registered programs now available as freeware. There will no further versions of this program - there is no profit in shareware, and any labour of love must come to an end.

I have abandoned the shareware business - I do not have the time to support the program as I would like; it seems unfair to charge for a program I can no longer support by e-mail, in writing or otherwise. I do, however, still welcome any comments you might have.

My deepest thanks to those who supported the program with their hard-earned dollars. You, the former registered users, are the reason Grow'Em lasted as long as it did.

Using the Search Function

Using the program is pretty straight-forward - either click on a selection, or select the appropriate underlined letter on the keyboard to navigate your way through Grow'Em. However, the Search function does merit a little elaboration.

If a plant or pest is not found while scrolling through the text, it may still be present but listed under a different name; I've tried to provide commonly used alternatives and these are still located using "Find". Try various spellings if uncertain, or shorten the search string.

For example, Philodendron pertusum is not found with the other Philodendrons, but is rather listed by its more common name of Monstera deliciosa. Using the Find function and entering "Philodendron pertusum" will still take you directly to this plant. This is, however, much more difficult than it need be.

It's much easier to search for a shortened versions of a name, i.e., using the Find function repeatedly on just the letters "Philo". This turns up each Philodendron in the database. Using the letters "Parlo" will turn up both the parlour palm and the parlour ivy, and saves you worrying about spelling (though both parlor and parlour are accepted by the program, and will produce results). This trick also avoids troubles with possible hyphenations.

Note that entering words such as "shade", "moist", and "clay" can turn up plants that do well in those areas. Just use Find repeatedly to locate all entries containing these words.
